Triple Crown threat takes 'Another' jog around Belmont
[info]phineasbin

Triple Crown hopeful I'll Have Another jogged around the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Park oval for a second day in a row and is scheduled to resume galloping on Friday.

The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner will attempt to become the 12th Triple Crown winner in the Belmont Stakes on June 9.

The colt's assistant trainer Jack Sisterson said Thursday "he gets over the track fantastic, he looked super, his energy level is high and he's doing everything we want to see him doing."

Sisterson said I'll Have Another will pick up the pace with a gallop on Friday.

The last horse to sweep the Derby, Preakness and Belmont was Affirmed in 1978.

Also, Belmont contender Union Rags worked five furlongs on Thursday in 1:01 at Fair Hill, Md.

A foot in the door on a fix for housing woes
[info]phineasbin

headshotJohn Crudele

The Federal Reserve has my plan to revive the US economy.

You probably remember the plan because I’ve been belaboring it in this column for years: Change the way personal retirement plans are allowed to be invested so Americans can put some of their Individual Retirement Account money directly into real estate.

Once the real-estate market is solidly improving, the rest of the economy should also respond.

With Washington incapable of spending more tax money to stimulate the economy and with the Fed unable to reduce borrowing costs any further, this idea — if carefully implemented — might (and I stress might!) help the economy get off its backside.

As readers know, I’ve been trying to get the folks in DC to look at this idea for years. I’ve tried the Obama administration and various run-of-the-mill Democrats with no success.

And I am still trying to get the Republican Party’s attention. (Persistence and nonpartisanship have always been my strong points. Some might even call me an equal opportunity pain in the ass.)

Here’s the newest development:

A few months ago, I approached some lower-level people at the New York Fed and asked them to pass the plan to people who mattered.

To my outright astonishment, they did what I asked. I only learned this because two weeks ago I again tried to get a hearing for this idea and was told by people at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington that it had already been passed along.

I don’t have a clue if the Fed will actually take this plan seriously or even study it. And, honestly, this really isn’t even the Fed’s jurisdiction, since Congress would have to change laws to make my idea happen.

But I figured that having the Fed as an endorser couldn’t hurt.

There are major hurdles — some real and some psychological. Remember, this idea is coming from a columnist at The Post — not the economics department of Harvard, Wharton or even the University of Chicago, where President Obama got his first economics adviser.

And it would really irk a lot of experts if an idea with such humble beginnings (I’m working on the attribute of modesty) actually were given serious consideration before Washington bankrupted the nation.

As you’ve been reading lately, the European Union this weekend will be fighting over whether to stimulate that continent’s economy by spending more money the EU doesn’t have, or go forward with austerity measures that haven’t even taken effect yet. The same argument is going on here.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said this week that the US economy could go back into a recession if budget-conscious lawmakers allow tax cuts to expire at the end of 2012.

Union Rags gets new jockey for Belmont Stakes
[info]phineasbin

John Velazquez will ride Union Rags in the June 9 Belmont Stakes for trainer Michael Matz, replacing Julien Leparoux, Velazquez’ agent, Angel Cordero Jr., confirmed yesterday.

Leparoux, replacing Javier Castellano, rode Union Rags in his first three starts this year. After an easy, four-length score in the Fountain of Youth, Union Rags finished a troubled trip third as the 2-5 favorite in the Florida Derby, then was squeezed at the start of the Kentucky Derby and came on late to finish seventh as the 5-1 second choice.

Leparoux was criticized for his ride in both losses, and a jockey change was inevitable.

Union Rags raced once at Belmont Park last year, winning the Grade 1 Champagne by 5 1/4 lengths. After the disappointing loss in the Derby, Matz and Union Rags’ owner, Phyllis Wyeth, decided to skip the Preakness to await the 1 1/2-mile Belmont. He is regarded as one of the chief threats to foil I’ll Have Another’s bid for the Triple Crown.

Velazquez won the Belmont in 2007 on the filly Rags to Riches.

Batting seventh, Teixeira goes 1-for-4 in return to Yankees lineup
[info]phineasbin

Mark Teixeira hadn’t started a game batting seventh in the lineup since 2003 — as a rookie with the Rangers — until last night. That’s what a season-long slump and an illness that won’t go away will do.

It didn’t help the offense, though Teixeira did rip a double to left in the ninth inning of last night’s 6-0 loss to the Royals in The Bronx.

BOX SCORE

Despite moving him down, Joe Girardi doesn’t think the first baseman is the reason the Yankees aren’t winning.

“If other guys were hitting he wouldn’t be the focus,” the manager said. “He hasn’t played in three days, [so] move him down and see what happens. I am not sure why he is the focus, but move him down.’’

Teixeira is the focus because he is hitting .227 after going 1-for-4, with a pair of strikeouts. He had been held out of the lineup the previous three games, but pinch-hit in the ninth inning of Sunday’s loss to the Reds.

Teixeira said he wasn’t bothered by the lineup move.

“It’s really not a big deal to me,” Teixeira said. “We all know I’m not 100 percent. We have to win games and if switching up the lineup helps, then great.”

But Girardi didn’t completely buy that theory.

“I am not sure Mark likes it,” said Girardi, who isn’t sure how long Teixeira will remain there. “He feels OK and I asked him a couple of different times.

Teixeira did admit the way he was feeling, as well as his lack of production, has affected him.

“I haven’t been driving the ball like I should be this year,” he said. “It’s just been a rough go. And it doesn’t really matter where I hit anyway. I’m not gonna make excuses. It hasn’t been a fun ride. It’s been a little exhausting.”

After wheezing his way through interviews for most of the last few days, Teixeira didn’t sound quite as bad yesterday.

“I feel like I’m getting a little better,” he said. “I know I can get back. I may need to take some time off, like we did this weekend when my energy and stamina aren’t there. It’s a day-by-day thing.”

And he remains confident he will regain his form, even if he’s not hitting in the heart of the lineup.

“I’m still Mark Teixeira,” he said.

His reasoning for why he still thinks he’s going to find a way to put up his usual numbers is simple.

“No one has been more consistent than me,” Teixeira said.

But it would help if he could breathe properly. That isn’t the case.

“I’ve eventually talked to every doctor out there,” Teixeira said. “Most of them said the same thing: Rest would have helped right from the beginning. That didn’t happen and that’s why this kind of hangs around. But I’m gonna be smart about it and weigh how much rest do I need versus [the fact that] I still want to be in the lineup.”

Apple, Samsung in patently hostile meeting
[info]phineasbin

No, we can’t do this over the phone.

Apple CEO Tim Cook is slated to meet today in San Francisco with the chief of Samsung in a court-directed mediation session, as the rival smartphone giants duke it out in a high-stakes patent battle.

The rare, in-person meeting — to which both Cook and Samsung CEO Choi Gee-Sung agreed only reluctantly at the request of a judge — isn’t expected to yield a settlement, according to people close to the talks.

Apple has accused Samsung of “slavishly” copying its iPhone and iPad with smartphones and tablet computers that run on Google’s Android operating system.

Samsung — whose smartphone sales have quadrupled and are believed to have handily surpassed iPhone sales during the first quarter — has countersued, accusing Apple of infringing on its patents.

The closely watched federal case is set for trial in late July in San Jose, Calif. Each company denies the other’s allegations of patent infringement.

The two tech giants already have had at least one mediation session, according to court documents. However, it was unclear whether Cook and Choi attended.

Kings looking to complete sweep of Coyotes, reach Stanley Cup
[info]phineasbin

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Dwight King has been living in a hotel since the Kings recalled him from the minors more than three months ago, and the playoff hero isn’t about to move out of his temporary digs.

He’s not tempting fate while the Kings are on the verge of exceeding his wildest dreams for his first NHL postseason run.

“It’s a dream,” King said Friday at the club training complex while Los Angeles recovered from its 2-1 victory in Game 3. “You want to be part of the Stanley Cup playoffs. To be a contributor is even better. Everything is coming around.”

GOOD TIMES: Kings defenseman Drew Doughty (8) celebrates with his teammates during LA’s Game 3 victory over the Coyotes that gave the winners a 3-0 lead in the Western Conference final. With one more win, the Kings will earn a berth in the Stanley Cup final.

Indeed, Los Angeles is on the brink of its second Stanley Cup final after leaping to a 3-0 lead over reeling Phoenix in the Western Conference finals. The eighth-seeded Kings are on an unbelievable 11-1 streak with eight consecutive wins in the postseason, outscoring their opponents 37-17 and winning the first three games in each of their first three series.

“It’s a situation that we’re in that we have to embrace, still look to get better and improve,” center Mike Richards said. “By no means is it going to be easy [today].”

The Kings have almost grown leery of talking about their winning streak, a bit like the teammates of a pitcher throwing a no-hitter. Yet concrete accomplishment is just one win away: With a victory in Game 4 this afternoon, the Kings finally would have another banner to hang next to the single division title and conference title banners forlornly decorating a small section of a wall at Staples Center.

That arena faces a time crunch: If the Kings-Coyotes match, scheduled for a 3:30 start, goes multiple overtimes, it may cause the postponement of the evening’s Clippers-Spurs NBA playoff game, slated to tip at 10:30, until tomorrow, according to an ESPN report.

But the red-hot Kings are thinking about finishing off a sweep in 60 minutes. They have joined Detroit (1995) and Edmonton (1983) as the only teams since 1980 to win 11 of their first 12 playoff games.

Forward Jeff Carter said it’s “a little bit” difficult not to think about the Stanley Cup final.

“We’re a confident group right now,” Carter said. “We’ll be ready to go.”

Hondo horsing around at Pimlico
[info]phineasbin

Well, it couldn’t last forever. Hondo, who swept a pair Thursday, saw his winning streak stopped at two yesterday when the Cubs and Mets conspired to raise his deficit to 1,435 arroyos.

Today, Mr. Aitch will try a day/night twinbill with Nova and Kennedy -- 10 units apiece on the Yankees and D’backs. Also, in the Preakness, he will back Creative Cause with five-unit win bet and try a one-unit exacta box involving Creative Cause, Zetterholm and Went the Day Well.

-$

The John Edwards jury was unable to reach a verdict yesterday, mainly because most of the time was spent deliberating about where Edwards stands on the all-time list of dirtbags ... Letterman and Conan O’Brien used the occasion of Conan’s appearance on the Late Show Thursday night to trash Jay Leno. That’s damn good television -- a couple of overpaid jealous losers whining about a guy whose job they want ... Al Gore reportedly has a new girlfriend, a Democratic donor named Elizabeth Keadle. Word is that Keadle’s friends, while happy for her, are concerned because ever since she started dating Gore she spends most of her day napping.

Offensive ineptitude may bring down Rangers
[info]phineasbin

Blog: Slap Shots

John Tortorella wasn’t making an example of Marian Gaborik on Wednesday night any more than the Rangers’ coach was making an example of Brian Boyle when he kept the big center on the bench for all but 2:30 (and 1:53 of even-strength) of the third period in the 3-2, Game 2 defeat to the Devils at the Garden.

The conference finals are neither the time nor the place for scapegoating or sending messages. The Rangers are the last team on earth that would need prompts delivered in that fashion, regardless. The guy behind their bench isn’t into mind games, in case you haven’t noticed.

Getty Images

COMING UP EMPTY: Carl Hagelin looks on as the Devils celebrate a 3-2 victory in Game 2 on Wednesday.

This is not Game 26 of the regular season.

Tortorella is, rather, about giving ice time to players he believes, a) have earned it; and, equally as important as it applied to Game 2, b) are best equipped to help the team win with it.

Neither Gaborik, who was deficient on and away from the puck more than once, nor Boyle, who has not been a force since being concussed in Game 5 against Ottawa, fit either definition in the third period Wednesday, even if keeping Gaborik on the bench in the final minute represented a decision more of the coach’s heart than of his head.

Tortorella is right about this: You win by defending. But you can’t win by defending alone. You can’t win by blocking shots alone.

You can’t beat the Devils, clearly the best, deepest, most mature and most poised opponent the Rangers have faced, without putting pressure on Martin Brodeur, who is in a separate category than Craig Anderson and Braden Holtby.

The Rangers are comfortable playing in their own end forever if they’re able to collapse low and inside-out to protect the house while keeping the puck to the outside.

Some of the Blueshirts’ finest minutes come when they might appear trapped, but are actually laying a trap for their opponents by inviting them into their lair.

But not in this series, where for the most part the Rangers have been scrambling and out of position, their discipline disrupted by New Jersey’s forecheck. The Devils have also done an excellent job eliminating the counter that should be available to the Blueshirts, but hasn’t been other than when Chris Kreider has been able to get out with his speed.

And of course, the Rangers’ forecheck and down low game has been disrupted by Brodeur’s ability to play the puck and chip it out of harm’s way. Even if Brodeur turns it over up the half wall, he has saved a defenseman from taking a hit. The Rangers need better placement on their chip-ins.

If the Rangers require more moxie from Gaborik, they certainly need a greater contribution from Brad Richards, who has barely had the puck against New Jersey and whose ability to hit the high notes has obscured his lack of consistency through the tournament that has mirrored the season.

Everyone wants to give the benefit of the doubt to Ryan Callahan, but the captain hasn’t scored at even-strength since 12:01 of the first period of the first game of the first round, and it’s hard to remember the last time he even came close.

Carl Hagelin hasn’t scored in the playoffs and neither has Ruslan Fedotenko, Mike Rupp, Brandon Prust or John Mitchell. Derek Stepan has one goal, none at even strength, through 16 games.

Everyone wants to give the benefit of the doubt to pretty much all of the Rangers, who are battered, who must be tired despite Tortorella’s claims to the contrary, and who should be a better team in Game 3 tomorrow with two days between matches.

But while they will continue to block shots and defend, they will have to score. The Rangers have averaged 2.12 goals per thus far in the playoffs. The 1945 Maple Leafs are the only team in modern NHL history to win the Cup scoring less than that, Toronto producing 1.85 per (24 goals in 13 games).

There is, by the way, no video available of coach Hap Day’s press conferences.
